Northerns PSA Satellite tournament results

The men’s finals of the Northerns PSA Satellite tournament saw last year’s runner-up Kelvin Ndhlovu take on Kundanji Kalengo, who due to only recently joining the PSA, had to qualify for the main draw. Both Zambian players had epic 5-setters in the semi-finals against eventual 3rd place Dewald van Niekerk (SACD) and Gary Wheadon (WP, 4th) respectively.

The pace and quality of the squash was relentless. Kelvin pulled ahead 1-0 but Kundanji came back to make it 1-1 and then edged ahead to 2-1. The 4th set was a short one where Kelvin fired in the winners and Kundanji seemed to be taking a breather, Kelvin taking it 11/2 to set up a decider. Kelvin eventually proved to be too strong and closed out the match 11/8 in the 5th with Kundanji a very tired man.

In the ladies’ final Lizelle Muller was just too strong for her SACD teammate Alexa Pienaar and took the match 3-1. Both players were seeded 5/8 but had little trouble reaching the finals without dropping a game. In the 3/4 playoff, Jenny Preece (CG) beat Northerns’ Helena Coetzee 3-1.

Sandile Masondo beat Jason Phillips in the men B-section final and in the C-section, youngster Jarrod Cousins beat Sifiso Musi in the final.
